I wanted to know how warm the water at URBNSURF gets through the year, so I started logging it. Every day a small script reads the water temperature URBNSURF shows on its homepage for Melbourne and Sydney and writes both numbers down. Older readings come from archived snapshots of that homepage, going back to 2021 for Melbourne. Sydney's record starts in December 2024, so it is still filling in.
Each point on a line is the typical temperature for that week of the year: a plain average of every reading from that week and the two weeks either side, across all the years in the log. Where a line breaks, there aren't enough readings yet. The shaded bands show the wetsuit thickness for each temperature, from the same Rip Curl table I use in the wetsuit thickness guide, which also covers booties, gloves and hoods.
Month by month
The same readings by calendar month, with the suit that matches each typical temperature. "Logging now" means that month has fewer than three readings so far.

Log your wave pool sessions
Surf Log has a Wave Pool session type. After a session you record how many waves you caught, whether you surfed the left or the right, the board you rode and your notes. Jot the water temperature and your suit in the notes, and next time you'll know what to pack.
